(This course includes the required 1 hour of Energy and 1 hour of Business Management content)
8:00 am – 11:30 am (Morning BREAK 9:30 am – 9:45 am)
1. Introduction & Overview
● Question(s)of the Day. This is a general question about professional development and learning opportunities.
● Program overview. Goals and expectations.
● MN Code cycle, availability and references. Lifecycle of a building code. MN Statute 326B.101. MN DLI website navigation for license look up, Building Official look-up and building code access.
● Single family home conversions. IRC-1 to R3. MN Statute 326B.107.
(anticipate finishing this about 9am)
2. MN Residential Energy code update/ summary/ overview. MN Rules 1322- 2015 International Energy Conservation Code. (Break at 9:30- 9:45)
● New home requirements . R301.1, 402
● Existing, remodel or additions. Code criteria and what are discretionary (design) items. MN Rules 1322.0100 Subpart 3
(this should finish approximately 10:15-10:30)
3. Decks R507
● Code requirements versus permit requirements.1300.0120 Subpart 4. Chapter 2 definitions.
(plan on spending 1 hour on decks..) Get ½ hour done before lunch which is at 11:30. Then finish after lunch so the deck portion will be done about 1:00
11:30 am – 12:30 pm LUNCH
12:30 pm – 3:30 pm (Afternoon BREAK 2:30 pm – 2:45 pm)
4. Porches R401, R403. R502, R602.10 (this should have a 1pm start, finish about 2)
● Dead loads, live loads overview.
● Roof framing options. Truss versus handframed and how this affects the resulting load path.
● Setback provisions. Things to look out for, property lines, wetlands, septic systems, other systems.
5. Accessory Buildings R201, R401, 601. NFBA Post Frame Design Manual (2- 3:00)
● Types – Post Frame, Slab on Grade. Define and discuss prescriptive code.
● Post Frame, tributary load. Footing options.
● Slab on Grade. Soil classifications, slab design.
● Wall framing 101. Wall bracing overview. Foundation connections.
(2:30 for break)
(Start Business Management at 3:00pm +/-)
6. Business Management
● Productivity tools, staff management. Delegation strategies.
(finish by 4:00)
