Most people don’t think about building codes until something goes terribly wrong. But for inspectors understanding codes, regulations and the reasoning behind them is critically important to keeping our community’s homes and commercial properties safe and secure. The City of Maplewood is looking for a Building Inspector II that is not only an expert in the field, but someone who takes pride in ensuring homeowners and contractors understand the importance of structurally and mechanically safe buildings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Consults with builders, developers, contractors, businessowners, and the public regarding compliance with appropriate codes and ordinances.
- Reviews plans and building applications for compliance with the State Building Codes and City ordinances.
- Performs field inspections for building, mechanical and plumbing to ensure that construction, alterations, and demolition work being performed complies with the State Building Codes and City ordinances.
- Maintains accurate records of all permits issued, inspections made, and other actions taken to implement conformance to code and ordinance requirements. Generates reports and issues violation notices and stop work orders as necessary.
- Investigates building complaints and takes appropriate action to resolve questions arising from these complaints.
- Performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities as needed or assigned.
- Keeps the Building Official informed as to current developments. Makes observations and recommendations when needed.

Minimum & Preferred Qualifications
- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- State Certification as a Building Official
- Two years of work experience completing building, mechanical, and/or plumbing inspections for residential and commercial structures
- Possess and maintain a valid Minnesota driver’s license or equivalent out-of-state driver’s license
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Additional years of inspection experience in building, mechanical, and plumbing for commercial structures
- Ability to meet the minimum qualifications for the Municipal Delegation Agreement for plan review and inspections
