Description
The City of Oakdale is seeking a Building Inspector who is committed to public service, professionalism, and community safety. Guided by Oakdale’s core values of Respect, Accountability, Excellence, Resilience, and Integrity, this role involves inspecting residential, commercial, and public projects for compliance with state codes and local ordinances. while fostering trust, clear communication, and collaboration with contractors, property owners, and fellow staff. This position offers meaningful work that directly supports the safety and quality of life of the Oakdale community.

Under limited supervision, this position conducts building inspections to ensure local building codes and other related code standards are met for community life/safety needs.

The City may hire candidates at any step in the pay schedule based on qualifications and experience.
Expectations
The essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to the following:

Work collaboratively with other staff to provide excellent and responsive public service
Review building permits, plans and applications for compliance with building codes and standards, as well as erosion/sediment control.
Knowledge of state building codes, city ordinances and zoning requirements, knowledge of construction practices and materials
Inspect construction methods and materials for compliance with building codes, contract specifications and industry standards
Conduct on-site comprehensive inspections of sites and structures to ensure compliance with existing building codes, city ordinances, and life safety regulations
Issue correction orders regarding code violations and issues stop work orders in instances where violations are severe, no permit has been issued, or present danger to the public
Explain and interpret building codes, other city ordinances, and contract specifications to contractors, property owners, and the public upon request
Maintain accurate and comprehensive records and creates reports based on observations made during inspections
Provide concise code interpretations for those circumstances in which there is a difference of opinion on the specific code provision
Perform rental housing inspections on all licensed rental units, coordinate with owners and managers for correction, and overall program administration
Provide timely and relevant information to supervisor and other city staff
Work with State of MN to identify unlicensed contractors and contractors that perform work illegally
Represent the city in a courteous, responsive, and professional manner in all interactions.
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
Perform other duties as assigned
